kauai

We went to Kauai again for breakfast this morning – hey at least this means we’re going to gym! :-)

I had the chicken melt, which is chicken and mayo and lovely melty cheese.

Caro had the tuna melt, which is the same except tuna replaces the chicken.

For lunch we went to Verde Restaurant.  They serve great organic foods there.

Caroline had the Fish Fritters, Venezuela Style.  I had a taste and they were tasty and succulent.

What I wanted to order, the chicken pie was not available today so I decided to have the pork espetada instead.  It was so very porky, which means wonderfully tasty, and was also coated in an apple sauce.  The dish came with vermicelli noodles and a medley of chopped peppers and ham.  Yay, more pork!  What a great porky meal that was!

For dinner we had Woolworths Hake fish cakes and Smash.  Caro asked me if I wanted any vegetables.  My answer?  Nah…  Besides Smash is a vegetable… sort of.

I read an article recently where Gordon Ramsay was asked what he would banish from domestic kitchens if he could.  The answer was something along the lines of “reconstituted dehydrated mashed potato” – clearly he was aiming at Smash and the like.  He reckoned that Smash was completely disgusting and that it was so easy to make real mashed potato that he couldn’t understand why people would use Smash.  Well Gordon, it may be easy to make mashed potato, but it’s even easier to make Smash, and guess what?  I actually like it.  Made not just with water, but also with butter, milk, salt and pepper it is pretty damn good.  It reminds me a bit of KFC mash that they sold as mash and gravy.

Never play with your food unless it plays with you first! – I think that quote came from either Beetlejuice or The Adams Family.  My food face looks like it might have come from Halloween Land in The Nightmare Before Christmas!

Caroline had the bread basket with anchovette.

While I had the Good Morning Wrap, which is scrambled eggs, cheese & chicken rashers.

For lunch I had the remainder of the chicken casserole.

For dinner we went to Cape Town Fish Market for sushi.

Here we have chilli prawn mayo in sweet beancurd wrappers.  Sticky fish, and prawn and avocado fashion sandwiches.

Next up we have a prawn tempura hand roll.

Seven spice calamari strips.

Seared tuna.  I like mine well done, not so much because I don’t like the taste or texture of raw tuna, but because I prefer the taste and texture of well cooked tuna.  I’ve heard people say that to cook tuna like this is sacrilegious and that if tuna is cooked like this then you might as well get it out of a can.  Well I think that’s a load of rubbish.  Even when tuna is cooked like this it is still fresh and tasty, but I do like canned tuna as well.

Caroline decided that she wanted another hand roll.  She got another prawn tempura, but this time opted for the cucumber wrapping rather than the nori.

Normally we get dessert and coffee at CTFM, but this time we decided to go upstairs to the food court and get some ice cream and coffee.  I didn’t take a photo of the ice cream, but here is the coffee from Gloria Jean’s.

18 May: The Day's Food

by Craig on May 20, 2010 · 0 comments

in Breakfast,Dinner,Lunch

For the first time in about a million years we made it to gym today.  Breakfast was naturally at Kauai.  Caroline had the bread basket with anchovette.

And I had the breakfast wrap.  This is the one with the chicken rashers instead of bacon, but it’s certainly still nice!

Lunch today was a can of Heinz cream of mushroom soup…  Yummy, but not as much as the cream of chicken soup.  (Why when I say ‘cream of…’ does Wayne’s World’s ‘cream of sum yun gai’ come into my head?!)

Dinner was the legendary Nandos.  Mine was a mild double cheese burger.

And Caroline had the mild chicken pita.  We ordered a jumbo wedges to go with that and then shared it out.  But the portion of wedges this time seemed huge.  Perhaps next time we only order the large!

Now this is a grudge purchase, as amazing as Nandos is.  We generally boycott Nandos because they refuse to use free range chicken, and we certainly do go to Nandos a lot less than we used to.  It’s been months since we were last there.  But I will admit that their food is bloody good, and every now and again we crave it.  Today we both had a craving for Nandos so it was a given that we would end up there.

Oh Meat You Are So Nice

Breakfast this morning was at the gym.  Caroline had the breadbasket with anchovette (fishpaste).

While I had the chicken melt.  Actually it doesn’t look that great in the photo, but it really is nice.  And after a week of no meat or dairy, chicken and cheese for breakfast was wonderful!

Lunch was back to being vegetarian, but only because that’s what leftovers we had.  It is the thai mixed veg with soba noodles from last night.

For dinner we visited The Gourmet Burger Company in Durban North.  What amazing burgers they make!  And especially apt for us to break our meat fast.  They have a special where you get one of their classic burger and a coke or beer for R45.  Considering that the burgers alone cost at least that much it’s a great deal.  We both had a classic cheese burger and added bacon.  It was bliss, but so filling.  We had a coffee afterwards but were unable to have a milkshake (something they’re renowned for), or a dessert.

The burgers come with a choice of salad or chips, as you can see we chose the chips.  If you order chips you also get a little bowl of mayonnaise.  I assume that this is for dipping the chips into, Dutch style.  I should have been born Dutch I think because I really like chips in mayo.

While we were sitting reading the menu, friends of ours Mr & Mrs PM arrived and sat at a table not far from us.  We had no idea that they were going to be there tonight, but when we realised that we were there together we joined our tables and chatted about our impending move to Australia, our imminent holiday to Namibia and life in general.  The PMs have just come back from a safari in Namibia and so they told us all about it.  It was a lovely evening!

Breaky at Kauai

by Craig on April 15, 2010 · 2 comments

in Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was at Kauai at the gym.

Caroline had the bread basket with Anchovette,

and I had the Chicken Melt.  The Chicken Melt is chicken pieces with mayo and spring onion and melted cheese in a wholewheat roll.  It was heavenly after being limited last week!  And look, chicken for breakfast!  That’s not so weird.

Breakfast at Kauai (again)

by Craig on April 9, 2010 · 2 comments

in Breakfast

We had breaky at the gym again today.

Caroline had the Magma Wrap in a gluten & wheat free wrap.  The Magma Wrap contains chicken, rice, beans, tomato and melted cheese.

I had the Morning Wrap, also on a gluten & wheat free wrap.  The Morning Wrap is scrambled eggs, chicken rashers, cheddar and tomato, and is very yummy!

The wraps today were not quite as plastic looking (or tasting) as the other day, but they are fairly hard to cut through despite not being hard at all.  They really don’t excite me much though.  I’d much prefer a regular wheaty wrap.  (Perhaps there’s a reason that things contain wheat.)

If you’re interested in having a look at Kauai’s menus have a look on their site here.

Breakfast at Kauai

by Craig April 6, 2010 Breakfast

The title says it all.  We went back to gym after over two weeks off! Gym sometimes means breakfast at the in-house eatery Kauai (technically Kauai In Motion to differentiate between them and the regular Kauai stores).  They do pretty good food.  My only complaint is that the Kauai In Motion stores don’t have the [...]
