Breakfast at Ile de Païn again

Once more, and for a final time, we visited Ile de Païn for breakfast.  As usual the food was excellent.

This is the protea flower that greeted us at the table.

Caroline had the Brioche French Toast again, which I didn’t take a photo of because you can see it here.  I had a taste of this this time and it is indeed a very tasty breakfast.

I had the “Companio” which is soft poached eggs with bacon and spinach on their toasted companio bread.  It was lovely, the eggs were all bursty and filled with their soft yolky goodness, and the white was completely set.  Perfection!  The spinach was a tiny bit hard to cut through given the mostly blunt knife I had, but I managed. :-)

I had to include the food porn shot of the egg exploded all over the plate!  YUM!

We also had a Ca-phe nau nong again, which we will have to replicate at home, and afterwards a café au lait.

I will miss Ile de Païn for sure.

Yesterday while we were at Ile de Païn we got a brioche to take home and have for breakfast this morning, which is exactly what we did.  We could have toasted it, but to be perfectly honest, we felt that bread this fresh could only be eaten plain with butter.  In fact on a subsequent slice I didn’t even bother with the butter.  It was quite simply amazing.

Lunch at Ile de Païn

in Lunch

Yes we ended up back at Ile de Païn. We said the other day that we would come back for lunch. I won’t go into a rave again about how good they are – that much we already know. I’ll just leave you with some photos and a few descriptions of what we had.

For drinks Caroline had the home made lemonade.  It was quite sharp, not particularly ‘ade’y, but it was refreshing (as Caroline puts it “lemony goodness”).  I had the cold version of the coffee I had the the other day Ca-phe nau da, which is a Vietnamese drink of coffee, cream and condensed milk.  It was very nice.

For lunch Caroline had the toasted ham and cheese.

And I had the beef burger.  You can’t really see the patty for all the onions (which we so nice and sweet), so I took another photo once I had cut into it.

The meat looks a little rare in the photo, but it isn’t.  I wasn’t asked how I would like it, but it came medium-well.  The redness in the photo can only be from something that was in the ingredients because the burger was cooked perfectly for my liking.

Afterwards we had another drink, this time Iced Café Mocha.  It was not milky or sweet.  In fact any sweetness that was in the drink probably came from the chocolate, but this also made it a bit bitter.  It was however a very nice drink and I’d order it again.

The star of the show was actually something that Caroline noticed while we were eating and upon investigation we found that they were indeed macaro(o)ns.  This is something that is common in Australia, not that we knew to have them while we were there, but he had seen them.  In South Africa, or at least in Durban we had never seen them and have been wanting to try them for a little while.  When we saw these we instantly snapped them up.  There was only one flavour on the shelf, and there were only four left, so we grabbed them all.  In our haste we forgot to ask what flavour they were, but we can conclude that they were vanilla with a chocolate and icing sugar dusting, and a butter cream filling.  There was a distinct marzipan flavour inside but this was probably just due to the inclusion of almonds which I believe (not sure) is a normal ingredient.

Note: I spelled Macaro(o)ns with a (o) because I believe they are called Macaroons here, and Macarons in Australia.  I suppose this is similar to us calling samoosas samoosas where in the UK they call them samosas.

Lunch at "Home"

by Craig on March 23, 2010 · 0 comments

Lunch was back at the holiday home. We bought some bread and a chelsea bun/snail roll from Ile de Païn this morning.

The chelsea/snail roll (ordered by pointing and saying “one of those please”) was lovely. Made of croissant pastry and glazed with a lemony icing with almond bits inside.

How can something as simple as bread be so freaking amazing? So fresh, so soft. Served with lovely butter. Mmm drool…

Breakfast at Ile de Païn

We had heard so much about Ile de Païn that we had to give them a try while here.  We were so impressed that you shouldn’t be surprised to find us there again in the next few days, possibly for lunch and dinner!

Ile de Païn started as a bakery, specifically making breads, and gradually grew into the café that it is now, so it isn’t surprising that the focus is on breads of all types, but that doesn’t stop them from making all sorts of other foods that involve bread, and making them very, very well.  I must also say that their coffees are of excellent quality too.

The coffee above is Ca-phe nau nong, a sweet coffee made with condensed milk.  It was sweet, but not overly sweet – it certainly doesn’t need additional sugar.  They also sell a cold version called “Ca-phe nau da”.

Caroline had the Brioshe French toast with mixed berry compôte and mascarpone cream. (R35)

I had the “Max deluxe” toasted ham and cheese with poached egg, sauteed cherry tomatoes and mushroom sauce (R44).  Look how luscious, shiny and red those tomatoes are!  I got a whiff of them when the plate arrived and I just had to lift the plate to my nose and smell them.  I was a bit over zealous and bumped my nose into the tomato resulting in the end of my nose becoming very red!  Fortunately there was a serviette at hand, and the roasted tomato did indeed smell very good!

I had to take another photo half way through the meal to show you the egg.  It was poached in the proper way (not that eggs poached in an egg poacher are bad) by cooking it in swirling hot water, but the yolk was so runny and hot, and when it broke it oozed all over the bread and plate.  Not a drop was wasted though.

Next was the organic flat white, with a lovely fern leaf etched into the crema.

The posy of flowers on the table.

And finally the view from our table.  Thesen Island is very beautiful, and could almost make me want to forget about Sydney and move there instead… almost. :-)
