Breakfast at Gusto!

Regular readers will know that we have moved from Durban to Johannesburg, and that we are a bit addicted to Gusto food. Unfortunately we no longer have regular access to Gusto, so when we are down in Durban we make an effort to get there and enjoy some of their food. This time it was breakfast.

Caroline’s breakfast was the “Half Gusto”. Bacon, scrambled egg, sweetcorn & coriander fritter, avocado and spicy tomato salsa.

My breaky was “The Full Monty”, their biggest breakfast! Bacon, fried/poached or scrambled eggs, pork sausage, tomato, baked beans, mushrooms, fried banana and toast.

As always Gusto was excellent.

Caroline’s last day at work is next Wednesday (the 30th) and so she’s been going to a few farewell lunches organised by different departments of her company that have appreciated the quality of her work over the years – to put it mildly they’re sad to see her go, but we must move on.  We fly to our future home – Sydney, Australia on Thursday to look for suitable places to live, and to do things like open bank accounts and the like.

On Friday one of the departments decided to take her to lunch at our favourite place, Gusto! (ok, they asked her where she wanted to go, and this was her choice) – I tagged along because I’m friendly with the people in that department and of course because it’s Gusto! :-)

I didn’t want to look like the food porn geek so I simply snapped a shot of my meal, the Riviera burger.  Caroline had the Hawaiian burger (beef patty with pineapple), and most of the others had burgers too.  The Riviera burger is a beef patty with brie cheese and cranberry sauce.  It’s a strange combination when you first think about it, but when you taste it you realise that it’s not as strange as you think, and it’s pretty amazing.  As you can see it is served on a portuguese roll (as are all the burgers at Gusto!), and it is also served with thick cut potato wedge chips.

Later in the day we did our weekly shopping, and we asked each other what we felt like for dinner.  Caro said that she felt like sushi, and I would never say no to sushi so we headed off to Cape Town Fish Market in Gateway Shopping Centre.  I didn’t actually take any photos of the sushi because we have taken so many over the past months from this branch of CTFM so if you want to see sushi just do a quick search on this site.  Caroline had only sushi – a prawn and avo fashion sandwich, seared tuna and a prawn tempura hand roll.  I had the same except for the hand roll.  Instead I had the Kingklip bento box.  The Kingklip* was amazing – so succulent and meaty, and to dip those Kingklip “fingers” into the Kewpie mayo was just wonderful! :-)  I wasn’t too impressed with the rest of the box though.  The rice had a hard outer coating (the outer rice had hardened), the kake age vegetables were mostly onion, but were also very oily, and the coleslaw was really just some shredded cabbage with mayo and sesame seeds.  If I could have had just the Kingklip I would have.

* Kingklip is a type of fish that lives in the cold waters off South Africa’s west coast.  It is a species that is currently under threat from over fishing (so I very rarely have it these days), but as a result it is often replaced with a fish that people from other countries might recognise, Ling.  The two fish are similar which is why they are interchanged, but Kingklip is supposed to be a better fish for eating.  The problem comes in when restaurants substitute Kingklip for Ling and don’t tell anyone.  I don’t believe CTFM do this but sometimes this happens at the supplier level and the restaurants don’t even know that the switch has happened.  Don’t you just love unethical Humans?

This last Wednesday we were at Gusto (as usual!).  Caro and I both had the “Eggs Tostada”.  Caroline had hers as per the menu…

And I had mine with bacon instead of salami.  Actually the menu states fried egg and we changed ours to poached eggs.

For dinner that night we went to Verde, also in Umhlanga.

Caroline had “The Girl from Ipanema” – grilled chicken breasts with an avo and coriander mousse.

I had the “Gaucho Matambre” (I think that’s the name) – beef wrapped around a carrot, boiled egg & spinach filling.  Very nice.

I wanted the chicken pie but it was still not available.

Likewise we both wanted the apple crumble (which is actually more of a tart/pudding) dessert which was also not available.  Last time we were there they said that they had a problem with the supplier of the flour which is why they couldn’t make this or the pie, but it’s been a while.

Instead Caro decided to have the rice pudding.

While I had the passion fruit mousse.

Last Wednesday we had breakfast at our usual Wednesday haunt, Gusto.

Look what we found on the table…  It’s like they knew…  (Ok, they do know, and I’m lying!  Yes this was on the table, but only after we swapped with another table. :-) )

Caroline had the half Gusto, which is bacon, scrambled egg, tomato relish/salsa, a sweetcorn fritter & avocado.  The half Gusto is the smaller version of The Gusto.

I of course had “The Londoner” which is your standard English breakfast.  I try to have other things honest, but when it comes to ordering only one thing comes out!

We weren’t feeling particularly hungry that night so we just had some beans on toast, which is a quite satisfying meal in itself.

Gusto Breakfast and Pizza

by Craig on June 12, 2010 · 2 comments

in Breakfast,Dinner

Last Sunday we decided to visit our favourite café in Umhlanga, Gusto!  We had got up a bit late, so we decided to go off for brunch.  Caroline had “The Full Monty” sans banana.

I had a hankering for a good burger, and since it was breakfast too I had the Breakfast Burger, which is a burger (obviously), with bacon (mmm) and a fried egg.  To make the occasion extra special, and since (at least in my reasoning) it was both breakfast AND lunch, I decided to have them put a pork sausage on the side.  Oh god it was good!

For dinner we decided to have pizza.  We were feeling a bit lazy, and must have been out an about because we ended up at Debonairs in Umhlanga.

I had a “Keeper” (on the left), and Caroline had a Four Seasons (right).  The Keeper is a special that they’re doing for the soccer world cup.  They have a few others, but the Keeper is beef steak strips, pork strips & cheese griller sausages, BBQ sauce, onions, cheese, tomato & herbs.  It was very nice.  I had some of Caroline’s pizza too and that was also very nice.  Have a look at the Debonairs website if you’re interested.

Last week Wednesday we went to Gusto for breakfast as we do most Wednesdays.  For breakfast I had “The Londoner”.  The food was already plated up looking like a smiling face, but I rearranged the toast to give it an extra facey edge!

For dinner we had savoury mince on toast (well, mine was on rye bread – because that’s what we had in the freezer), with fried egg on top.

14 May: The Day's Food

by Craig May 15, 2010 Breakfast

Mmm, breakfast this morning was hard boiled eggs and toast.  I got the idea to put soy sauce on them from TFP.  What did I think of soy sauce on eggs?  Well it was certainly interesting.  I did like it, but then I also really like plain hard boiled eggs, so I think I’ll keep [...]
