fruit salad

Let’s get this blog back on the road!

Since the last post we left South Africa and arrived in Australia.  We have moved twice – first to a temporary residence and then to our permanent home!  We have also furnished the house and waited for the cats to come out of quarantine.  Let’s just say it’s been a busy time since the last post.

Well to make way for our new Aussie posts, I am posting the remainder of our South African food posts all in one go!  So here goes…

Caroline’s parents came up to Johannesburg and we went to a restaurant called Cappuccinos.

The first photo is of a chicken and ham salad that one of Caroline’s parents had.

The other parent had this salad which consisted of chicken, feta and bacon.

Caroline had this bacon and avocado pizza.

While I had this chicken cordon bleu with a yummy mushroom sauce and fried potato scallops.

Here’s a closer view of the chicken cordon bleu.  Mmm…

We finished the meal with a slice of this awesome apple pie.

A little later we went to Pretoria to visit friends and we went to eat at the new Nando’s Peri Deli.

Nando’s have embarked on a plan to take Nando’s chicken a bit upmarket and offer free range chicken burgers with black mushroom, haloumi and rocket.

They’ve also partnered with Vida e Caffe to provide premium coffee.

Mmm.  The free range mushroom & haloumi chicken burger!  (It’s the chicken that’s free range, not the mushroom) :-)

And of course, the iconic Nando’s wedges.

One day we had a bacon craving so we fixed that with a bacon roll!

We had some credit left of our travel cards so we took the Gautrain to Sandton and visited Café 41 once more.

This time Caroline had the beef schnitzel, which came with egg (which I was most upset about), a creamy mushroom sauce and potato croquettes.

I had the chicken schnitzel which came with a cheese sauce and potato croquettes.

Café 41 also serves organic coffee.  This was Caroline’s cappuccino with foam.

And my cappuccino with cream.

Afterwards we went to Rococo for dessert and had the red velvet cake,

and coconut cake.  Both were amazing!

The day before we left South Africa we stayed in a hotel close to the airport.  We had a burger there for dinner which was pretty good, but not the best burger I’ve ever had.  It came with plenty of chips!

And finally on our flight from Johannesburg to Sydney we had two meals.  A dinner that I can’t quite remember what the protein was.  I think it was chicken, but I’m not 100% sure.  It was served with potato, broccoli, butternut, and was gratinated with cheese and olives.  It was also served with a bread roll, crackers and cheese, a salad and a chocolate brownie.

And for breakfast we had fritata with bacon, mushroom and creamed spinach. Also accompanying the main was a fruit salad, snail roll and orange juice and coffee or tea.

So there you have it.  All the final meals of our time in South Africa.  The next food blog entry will be Sydney food! :-)

1st Vegan Day

by Craig on April 19, 2010 · 0 comments

in Breakfast,Dinner,Lunch

A friend of ours pointed out that what we’re doing this week is not just vegetarian, but vegan.  I suppose it is if we don’t have any fish.  We are allowed some fish this week, but we’re thinking that we will forego the fish and have a proper meat free week.  If we can do this we can do anything!

I do have to say that I don’t think it’s possible to be a vegetarian AND a foodie.  I think if I had to do this long term I might go mad.  As it is I think I’m going to make up for it next week.  I’m already looking forward to a good steak and a burger!  If I think about it, I don’t think we’ve had red meat now for over three weeks.

So for breakfast this morning we had fruit salad.  It was very nice, but not as satisfying (and artery clogging) as a good English breakfast!

Lunch was a boring old salad…

Dinner on the other hand was much better, but still hardly satisfying.  We had wheat and gluten free pasta with mushrooms and organic tomato and basil sauce.

Breakfast at Kauai

by Craig on April 6, 2010 · 0 comments

in Breakfast

The title says it all.  We went back to gym after over two weeks off!

Gym sometimes means breakfast at the in-house eatery Kauai (technically Kauai In Motion to differentiate between them and the regular Kauai stores).  They do pretty good food.  My only complaint is that the Kauai In Motion stores don’t have the full menu and as such their menu is limited, and as a result, a bit boring after a while.

Caro had the fruit salad with YMH (yoghurt, muesli, honey) – it even came out in the right order!  The muesli is wheat free as requested (due to our diet this week).

I had the Magma Wrap on a gluten and wheat free wrap.  I normally have the normal wrap but as our diet this week specifies no wheat, I went for this option.  The magma wrap is chicken, kidney beans, tomato, rice and melted cheese.  Very nice!  It comes with a very edible garnish of cucumber and carrot.  I can’t say much for the gluten and wheat free wrap though.  A bit lot plasticy.

Just to fill you all in as to why we’re going for wheat free options at the moment.  We’re following Patrick Holford’s “6 Weeks To Super Health” diet.  It’s not so much a weight loss diet, although it does have that effect.  The main goal is to become healthier, and to be shown how to do it.  Each week a different objective is introduced, and this week the objective is on digestion.  Wheat, apparently, is a major gastro-intestinal irritant in some people which is why they dictate leaving it out for this week.

Now we don’t have to follow this diet 100%, but I have a problem with a permanently stuffy head.  Constantly blocked nose and sinuses afflicts me and I need to find out what it causing it.  It’s so bad that I have a cortisone nasal spray that I have to use every day to keep my nose clear.  If I don’t use it, once the cortisone has worn off the mucous comes back.

When we went to Australia last year we encountered soy milk that was very accessible in eateries which made it easy to stick to it.  One of the major causes of mucous in a lot of people is lactose intolerance (an allergic reaction to the lactose contained within dairy products).  I wanted to check whether this was the case with me so I started replacing cow’s milk with soy milk, and stopped using the nasal spray.  I was fine while I was in Australia, but on my return to South Africa the mucous came back despite still mostly sticking to soy milk.  It clearly isn’t lactose intolerance.  I continue to use soy milk now though because I like it, and because it is a healthier alternative anyway.  I tried many different products, both pharmaceutical and homeopathic but nothing helped.  Antihistamines had no affect.  When I started using the cortisone spray again things got better.

So now I’m testing for wheat.  Since yesterday morning I have not used the nasal spray and my nose is still clear.  If it continues to be clear without the spray by the end of the week and the mucous returns next week after eating wheat then we know what the problem is.  To be honest I hope it isn’t that because I can’t see me not eating bread or other wheat products in the future.  I’ll have to stay on the nasal spray but at least I’ll know what is causing the problem.

If it isn’t the problem then I’ll have to get some allergy tests done to find out what the problem is.  It’s possible that I have developed an allergy to cat hair (or rather a protein in cat saliva that is on their hair – delightful thought hey?) – If that’s the case I will have to live with it.  I’m not living without my cats!

Dinner: Fruit Salad

by Craig on April 4, 2010 · 0 comments

in Dinner

As we’re still pretty full from lunch, dinner tonight was fruit salad.  It was very yummy.  The fruit was fresh and crisp and tasted so good!

The fresh fruit that Caro put in the salad was banana, grapes, kiwi fruit, pineapple, mango, pear & orange.

Lunch: Savoury Mince & Salad again!

by Craig on April 1, 2010 · 0 comments

in Lunch

Today’s lunch was the same as yesterday, savoury mince and salad. I didn’t bother with a photo as it’s the same as yesterdays post!

We have this little compartmentalised Lock & Lock container that is kind of like the Japanese bento boxes. Caro sometimes takes this one to work. In the top small container we have a fruit salad consisting of grapes, kiwi fruit, banana & blueberries. The small bottom container is the savoury mince that we had the other night, and in the main compartment we have the salad which is leaves, cherry tomato & cucumber.

I had the same except that mine was not in a bento.
