Fig Tree Cafe on Urbanspoon

On Sunday morning we went to Fig Tree Deli Café.  I decided I wanted to go there after seeing the double bacon and egg roll that TFP wrote about.

Here it is in all it’s splendour.  Some people might balk at the crusty egg, but I actually like it like that.  Of course that usually conflicts with one of my other loves, the runny yolk egg.  Fortunately Fig Tree Deli did an amazing job of preserving both qualities here!  You might also notice that there are two eggs on here, and you’d be right, for this is Fig Tree Deli Café’s famous double bacon and egg roll.  It also had BBQ sauce on it and as a result, I do declare it frikkin’ awesome.

Caroline had the biggest breakfast they had on the menu.  Well, ok, she wasn’t going to.  She wanted the beans that were not on the other breakys, and I wanted the halloumi that she would get.  I ended up with the sausage too – bonus!  Another excellent breakfast.  I’d highly recommend Fig Tree Deli Café.

Doyles at the Wharf on Urbanspoon

We then caught a bus from Bondi to Watsons Bay, the home of Doyles On The Wharf. I love the fish & chips you get from Doyles, although I had a rather good fish & chips during the week from a place in Balmain too.  Ok, Doyles was better, the chips were not oily or steamed soggy from the heat trap caused by the fish on top.  The fish too was just lovely, tender and tasty.  I could probably eat at Doyles every day too…

But what sets Doyles on the Wharf aside from every other fish and chip shop I know of, is the view.  We sat on the wall next to the beach, and this was our wonderful view of the bay, with Sydney city in the distance.

How could anyone say no to that view?  This is one of the many reasons that I love Australia and Sydney.

I like ferries too. :-)

This is the view back on Doyles from the ferry wharf.  The steps at the waters edge is where we sat to enjoy our meal.

And to end an amazing fun filled day we finished at the Bondi Winter Festival.  We didn’t skate, but lots of other people did.

In the other direction you can see how busy it was.  All the pointy tents were stalls where you could buy yummy food.  In the lower left of the picture someone has those spiral fried potatoes.  We didn’t have one, but I’ve had them before, and they’re very good.

Inside the “ski hut”, which was warm and inviting, was lots of place to sit and relax with your glühwein.

They even had a fireplace with couches around it.  This little girl looked like she wasn’t going to give up that fire for anything!

Outside they had these cool gas heaters that used the intake of air to make wonderful fiery vortices.

The view from the ski hut looking back towards the entrance.

Finally, food time.  I snuck a picture of the German sausages that would soon be ours.

And here it is.  A cheese kransky on a long roll with sauerkraut, onion and three sauces, mustard, tomato and BBQ.

Dessert was to be Dutch poffertjes (spelt incorrectly on the sign too)

The poffertje machine cooking our poffertjes.

While we waited for out poffertjes we watched the skaters.

And there they are.  A dozen poffertjes with chocolate sauce.

And a dozen with maple syrup.  We shared both of them for maximum taste sensations!

And look, whether or not this is related to the festival I don’t know, but the street is all lit up all Christmassy like too.

On Sunday we felt like a bacon and egg fry up, and so that’s what we did.

Two eggs on toast, two sausages and a pile of lovely bacon!

The sausages were another packet from the new Woolies range, this time was the sundried tomato and basil porkies, and yes, they were good!

For dinner Caro made butter chicken.  We found a butter chicken spice mix at Woolies that we tried.  It was very nice.  I don’t think it would be a substitute for butter chicken in a restaurant, but it was good for a quick home meal.

Last week Wednesday we went to Gusto for breakfast as we do most Wednesdays.  For breakfast I had “The Londoner”.  The food was already plated up looking like a smiling face, but I rearranged the toast to give it an extra facey edge!

For dinner we had savoury mince on toast (well, mine was on rye bread – because that’s what we had in the freezer), with fried egg on top.

Being a Thursday morning we ended up at our usual breakfast place, Gusto Café.  I had “The Full Monty”.

Caroline had two croissants with butter and jam.

For lunch we went to Refresh Café at La Lucia Mall.  Caro had the Zesty Haloumi Chicken open sandwich.

And I had the Mediterranean burger.  A beef patty with halloumi, avocado and peppadew, drizzled with sweet chilli sauce.

We were not planning on eating out for every meal of the day, but we had to deliver a bed that we had sold and by the time we were finished it was getting late.  I felt like some Thai food and suggested this to Caroline who thought it was a great idea.

We’ve been wanting to try a new restaurant in Umhlanga called Phuket Thai and we’re so glad we did as the meal was wonderful.  This shouldn’t really have been a surprise since the restaurant is run by a Thai family.

For starters Caroline had the “Golden Bags”.  Little dumpling type “bags” filled with minced chicken.

I wanted to try their sushi.  It was very, very good.

For main course Caroline ordered the crispy calamari.  It was indeed crispy and very tasty.

I had the Thai red curry with chicken and prawns.  Lovely and hot, both temperature and spice, and wonderfully fragrant.

For dessert we both decided to have the deep fried ice cream.  It was very nice and not at all oily as deep fried ice cream can be, but it was a little strange.  Firstly I’ve never had deep fried ice cream with a chocolate sauce and hundreds and thousands sprinkled on top, and secondly the ice cream itself was neopolitan (vanilla, strawberry & chocolate).  While unconventional it did taste good.

Breakfast at Fego Gateway

by Craig on May 15, 2010 · 0 comments

in Breakfast

Caroline had to get a new phone and starter pack and we found a good deal on a phone at Incredible Connection in Gateway.  While there we had breakfast at the Fego.  Caroline had the ham, cheese and tomato toasted sandwich.

And I of course had the full breakfast.  I left the mushrooms and tomatoes as they tasted a bit strange, but the rest was rather yummy!

by Craig May 5, 2010 Breakfast

Finally up to date with posts except for today!  Hurray! Yesterday we had breakfast at Gusto Café.  I had the Full Monty English breakfast without the fried banana.
