Mamak, Chatswood, Sydney

Another epic visit to Mamak!  Mamak is one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney.  Isn’t it strange how a lot of my favourite food these days is Malaysian?  A previously undiscovered secret gem of Australia.

We were here with the three from Perth, TFP, Juji & Jay, and now joined by a fourth, Jac (of TFP & Jac fame).  We were going to the Chatswood branch as they hadn’t been to this one before, and because the queues are generally less here than they are in the city, but we arrived a little later than we should have and found a short queue.  It wasn’t long though before we were in and the feasting could begin.

I wanted cendol ($6) as a drink, but they didn’t do it like that, so I ordered the dessert version and had it as a drink!  Cendol is lovely but hard for me to describe.  Perhaps I’ll let Wikipedia do that.

Roti canai ($5.50).  Fluffy litte roti.  It comes with two curry based dipping sauces, one hotter than the other, and a spicy sambal sauce.

Roti telur bawang ($7).  Folded roti with egg and red onions, and the same two dips and sambal as the roti canai.  Very nice.  Well this is why I can’t comment properly on all these because theyr’e all too nice!

Kacang panjang belacan ($14).  Stir fried long beans with chillies and shrimp paste.  Not really my favourite of the night, but then I’m not a huge string/long bean fan.

Kari kambing ($16).  Lovely tender slow cooked lamb curry.  Did I say tender?  It was!

Rice ($2.50 per person).  Rice is nice, what else can I say? :-)

Ah yum.  Er, I mean ayam. Ayam goreng … literally chicken fried ($14).  Nice thick chunks of chicken, in a nice batter.  I really enjoyed this one.

Another Mamak favourite of mine are the satay.  Here we have a mix of chicken and beef satay ($16 for 12), that come with … wait for it … a satay sauce! :-)

Almost every table filled, but I’ve seen it busier than this.  It can get really loud in here.

A new discovery that I will most certainly be having on our next trip.  Ais kacang ($6).  Red beans, corn, grass jelly, rose-syrup and condensed milk on shaved ice.  Very nice.  Thanks Jac for that tip!

Kopi tarik & Milo ais (both $3.50).  Kopi tarik is a Malaysian coffee with condensed milk.  It is frothy on top because it is poured over and over again until it gets a frothy top and cools a bit.  Milo ais is very nice too, I’d never had that before, as is Milo tarik.

My favourite of course, is roti kaya ($7.50).  Roti folded with kaya (coconut jam) inside and served with ice cream.  I love this so much I bought the company.  Oh no wait that was an advert.  Well I should it’s that good!

Roti tisu ($9.50).  As the menu says, “Paper-thin, extra-crisy and  served tall.” – Yeah, and loaded with sugar! :-)  Ok, not loaded per se, but one the inside of the roti is a sprinkling of semi-caramelised sugar that is oh so nice.

Ok, this is the sugar hit! Roti bom ($8.5), a compacted roti, with a super-sweet syrup.  Argh, I like them all!

A view from outside.  You get to look though the window and see them making everything.  The chevron tape was outside – just a reflection in the window!

It’s been a while since we posted about Harry’s Café de Wheels.  Of course if you follow us on twitter you’ll know that we have visited Harry’s in between, but this is the official post!

You can take a look at our other visits to Harry’s …

September 9 ,2011 - Woolloomooloo
July 7, 2010 - Haymarket

We were actually going to go to Mick’s Bakehouse, but by the time we got there they were just closing and all their pies were gone.  Oh well, we’ll just have to visit Harry’s … again. :-)

I actually prefer the Harry’s in Woolloomooloo.  Not because of the food, that’s generally uniform.  I just find the area around the Haymarket stall to be a bit dirtier and a few more dodgy people.  But don’t let that put you off, it’s  really not that bad.

Again, behold the curry tiger pie in all its awesomeness.  A curried beef pie, topped with potato mash, mushy peas and gravy.  Super-mega-yummo!

The innards shot.  Chunky beef, filled to the brim in a luscious curry sauce.  God, did I just say luscious?  I sound like Nigella Lawson! :-)  (Nigella would have said voluptuous of course.)

And this little piglet just had to also have a hot dog with the lot (a.k.a. Hot Dog de Wheels).  Yes, indeed that is a hot dog, on a bed of mushy peas, beans and mince, with onions, chilli sauce and cheese sauce.  Noice!  But a meal on its own.

For those that don’t know, Harry’s pies come from Hannah’s Bakery, so if you see people around the city advertising that they have Hannah’s pies, you can also go there, they’re the same, but you may not get all the trimmings.

Food: Yok Thai, Manly (NSW, AU)

by Craig on September 14, 2011 · 0 comments

in Dinner,Food

This week was Thai week and while we have in infinite number of Thai restaurants in our home area, we wanted to travel somewhere.  Caro had the day off so we decided to go to Manly, which involved a train and ferry trip, which is just perfect by me.

We were going to go to Chat Thai, and there is one in Manly, but we were not sure if it was a proper restaurant or just a take away.  When we arrived at Chat Thai we realised that it was indeed just a take away, and while that would have been fine, there are other Chat Thai restaurants that are proper restaurants and we’d rather save our visit until we can get to one of those.  So we headed down to the beachfront to find another restaurant that we had had our eye on, Yok Thai.

Yok Thai is a nice little restaurant.  It’s not huge, but they do have some outside tables, and on the night we were there they had some quiet light music which was quite pleasant.  The food was very good and we’ll certainly be back there again some time.

These are the chicken balls.  Seriously.  Ok, they’re not chicken testicles.  But they were tasty.  Even with the peanut pieces (I hate peanut).

The curry puffs were awesome.  They came with a little sweet and sour sambal which was also very nice.

The Massaman Curry was lovely.  Rich and dark, with large chunks of beef and potato.

I think perhaps the BBQ pork was the star of the show.  Forget about the salad, the corn and the sprouts, I would have been satisfied with just the pork.  It had the best BBQ taste that I have had in a very long time.  I want more even as I type this.

Even with Ben & Jerry’s at the end of the road, the allure of coconut ice cream was too strong.  It was creamy and the coconut was, well, coconutty, intense, and lovely.

Caroline had the Sticky Rice with coconut milk.  I had some and it was very tasty and very moreish.  Caroline said that she could have eaten an entire bucket of this!

Food: Season Thai, Gordon (NSW, AU)

by Craig on June 30, 2011 · 0 comments

in Dinner,Food

Last night was Thai night, and so we went up the road to Gordon, to visit Season Thai for the first time.

And what a lovely restaurant it is.  Good food, good atmosphere and good decor.

We decided to not go too heavy after our three course Japanese meal yesterday, so we opted only for a starter and a main.

For starter we shared a salt and pepper squid ($7.90), which was very nice and not too oily.  It was served with a sweet chilli sauce.

And we also shared a mixed entrée ($8.90), which consisted of a fish cake, a spring roll, a curry puff and a gai satay.  It was served with sweet chilli sauce and a peanut sauce.

For main course we shared a green chicken curry ($15.90) which was lovely and creamy and full of vegetables.  I thoroughly enjoyed this.

But the star of tonight’s show was the Massaman curry ($18.40 with a roti; $15.40 without).  It certainly isn’t an authentic representation of Massaman curry, but to be honest I don’t care as long as it tastes good, and this did indeed taste good!  The meat was in large chunks, and didn’t have much of a curry taste, but the meat was so incredibly tender and the wonderful sauce more than made up for a lack of curry taste.

The total bill including drinks was $61.10.

Our first stop of the day was Krispy Kreme.  But first let me tell you why…

First of all, we woke up really late (by that I mean 9:30ish).

While in Australia we need to have Internet access.  The last time that we were here I found out to my disgust that I was not able to tether my iPhone to my notebook unless I was a post-paid/contract customer.  As I had bought a pre-paid SIM this wasn’t going to happen this time.  In South Africa Vodacom doesn’t care whether you tether (heh, that rhymes!), and neither should any phone company.  Ultimately all it makes you do is use your phone more for Internet access, and ultimately they end up getting more money out of the deal.  The only possible reason for disallowing tethering is if you offer unlimited data access, which isn’t the case here.

Any how, so with this in mind we paid $149 for a Cellular Wifi Router from Virgin Mobile Australia.  The device is a dream to use and is really fast for a mobile device.  The only problem is that this particular one didn’t want to recharge the battery.  It was perfectly happy to let me use it to access the Internet, but once the battery ran out that was it.  Ok, s**t happens, I’ll just take it back and get a replacement.  Off to Bondi Junction Virgin Mobile to be told that they do not have any more in stock and that I was welcome to go over to the Pitt Street branch to swap it out there.  Ok that’s a bit of a schlep but if it takes care of the problem then I’m willing to do it.

Forgoing a visit to bills we headed to the train station – paid $20 for a day pass (we wanted to go on the ferry later in the day), got to Virgin Mobile Pitt Street to be told that they can’t swap out the device because we didn’t buy it from them.  Uh hello?  This is the same company isn’t it?  So now we’re hacked off and went looking for other cellular companies to get a different device from.  To cut  a long story short (well maybe too late for that), there doesn’t seem to be anyone better than Virgin Mobile price wise.  I guess it’s a Yin/Yang situation – if you get something good in one area, like a good deal – something else must suffer, in this case customer support apparently.

We mulled the situation over a Hungry Jack’s burger (for breakfast – we were starving by this point) – and decided that the best course of action was to buy a new device from Virgin Mobile Pitt Street and then organise a refund from the Bondi Junction branch – all I had to do to organise this was to call their support line, explain the problem and get a return authorisation number – which is where we stand now.  We’ll see how we fare with actually getting the refund tomorrow.

So really this was all a lead up to the fact that by this stage we needed some serious comfort food.  Enter Krispy Kreme… :-)

This is our selection.  Caroline’s at the top – original glaze on the left, and strawberry jam on the right.  Mine on the bottom, strawberry and kreme on left, and apple custard crumble on the right.

Caro’s first thoughts of the strawberry jam doughnut were that it needed to be apricot – that is a typically South African thing.  But she also said that it didn’t have a typical doughnut taste.  That was fixed by the original glaze doughnut though when she proclaimed that that one was perfect!

Mine were pretty good too.  The apple custard crumble was exactly that.  I love custard and the apple taste was attained by including tiny chunks of actual apple in the custard filling.  The strawberry and kreme doughnut was a little disappointing in that it didn’t really have much filling in it.  I’m sure this was just an oversight, because when I got to the filling it was very nice – there just wasn’t very much of it.

Here’s the close up of the whole apple custard crumble doughnut;

The original glaze, complete with a bite!

And an extreme closeup of a mostly eaten strawberry and kreme doughnut.  It was mostly eaten because that’s how much had to be eaten to show you the filling. :-(

For lunch – well actually just a coffee stop since we ate breakfast so late – we went to Rion Corso Café in Manly.  It wasn’t a planned stop, we were mostly waiting for the return ferry, but we’re glad we stopped there.

Caroline had a tea.  I had a cappuccino and we shared a blueberry fridge cheesecake which was very nice.

After one of my last tweets my tweet was retweeted by @sydney_feed.  When looking through a few other tweets that had been retweeted recently there was one that said something like “good coffee and Sydney are rarely used in the same sentence” – Well I’m going to change that.  We’ve found some of the best (good) coffee that we’ve ever had in Sydney.  Sydney and, I would imagine Australia in general has consistently good coffee where-ever we have been – even the tiniest of outlets have at the very least filter coffee.  South Africa, while better now than a few years ago, still doesn’t have consistently good coffee.

For dinner we visited Ichi-ban Boshi.  We didn’t have any of the ramen – we’ll keep that for another time.  This time we both had the chicken katsu curry.  The verdict?  Excellent.  There could have been more chicken I suppose, but what we did get was very nice, and that curry sauce was so good, once the chicken was gone I made sure that all the rice was coated in the curry sauce, and then gobbled that up with gusto!

Mmm, look at that “kare” :-)

On Thursday last week we went with Caroline’s parents to Mt Edgecombe Country Club.  They have a restaurant there that does pretty good value meals.

Caro and I both had the calamari starter which came with avocado, and a garlic aïoli, although I think they just used mayo and added a little garlic!  The calamari was nice, but it wasn’t incredibly special.

For main course, Caro had the beef curry, which was wonderful.  It had large beefy chunks and a lovely curry sauce.  It came with a mould of rice and a poppadom.

I had the eisbein, which was nice and meaty and had almost as much crackling on it as there was meat!  It was topped with roasted onions and came with mashed potato.

We both decided to have what we thought was lemon meringue cake, but this is what arrived. It was still very definitely lemon meringue, and was quite an interesting take on an old classic.

Phuket Thai Restaurant, Umhlanga

by Craig June 13, 2010 Dinner

On Monday we felt like going to a new steak restaurant in Umhlanga called Steak & Ale.  Unfortunately they were closed so we had to choose another restaurant instead.  We’d already had an excellent meal at Phuket Thai restaurant a week or so before, and it was so good that we had been craving for [...]

3 Meals In 1 Day

by Craig April 14, 2010 Breakfast

It was our usual promenade walking day today and as usual we ended up at Gusto! for breakfast.  Today Caro had the Eggs Tostada (Vegetarian option).  The mushrooms where so mushroomy.  By that I mean that they had not had all their flavour drained away in the cooking process. I was going to choose something [...]

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner! (and a water leak)

by Craig April 13, 2010 Breakfast

It was a bit of a hectic day today so I didn’t get a chance to post all of these earlier. We detected a water leak and had to try and find where it was coming from.  This involved turning off all the taps and closing valves to isolate the house.  When all that was [...]

Lunch: Vegetable Curry

by Craig April 9, 2010 Lunch

Looking around the kitchen to see what I could find that was wheat free yielded only this.  Koo Vegetable Curry.  It’s not bad, but certainly not a replacement for the real thing. It contains, carrots, potatoes, beans (not sure what type – the baked bean type! ), peas and a basic curry sauce. I was [...]
