Breakfast this morning was something called Heart Mates.  They looked interesting, but to be perfectly honest, they didn’t really taste like much at all.

Dinner that night was at Col’cacchio at Gateway.  Caroline wanted to try “The Moghul” which was an Indian themed pizza that I tried a while back.  It really is a nice tasting pizza.

I decided to have the special which is “Bunny Chow Calzone”.  It was also very nice.  It had a tandoori chicken filling.

Here it is opened up.  Lovely spicy chicken with oozy cheese!  If you’re wondering where the bunny chow bit comes from, well bunny chow is a traditional Indian meal that is specific to South Africa.  When you order it in a shop it is a curry with a meat served in a hollowed out half loaf of white bread.  The bread that was scooped out of the loaf is then eaten with the curry to soak up all the juices.  You can get more information on that at Wikipedia and on Google.

For dessert we had the tiramisu which was served in a glass bowl, and was nice and boozy. :-)

For breakfast we had rice crispies, which Caroline tells me should actually be spelt “Krispies” – I never noticed…

Lunch was a Woolworths Creamy Farmstyle Chicken Soup.  I’m not exactly sure what was farmstyle about it, unless the copious amounts of garlic are what makes it that.  It wasn’t a bad soup but you could certainly taste the garlic – which isn’t always a good thing.

For dinner we had a ravioli that had been sitting in the cupboard for ages.  It was dried and needed to be reconstituted.  The filling was pork, and we added a puttanesca sauce, but to be honest the ravioli didn’t really taste like much, so it was a bit disappointing.

To make up for the disappointment, and because we are still trying to eat our way though the contents of the freezer before we move to Australia, we had Italian panettone cake with custard.  It’s typically a Christmas cake, but I can eat it any time, any place!  I love panettone and I have a previous boss (Grace) to thank for that!  We went on a company team building event one year and it must have been close to Christmas as she had placed a panettone in each room of the hotel.  It was my first exposure to panettone and I’m very glad she did that!  Pretty much every year since then we’ve bought one (or two, or more) at Christmas.

Tuesday’s breakfast was a simple bowl of Weetbix.

Lunch was a can of Heinz Cream of Chicken Soup with two small seedy bread rolls.

Dinner was at my parents house.  Dinner was a chicken dish with mashed potato, julienne carrots and green beans.

And for dessert, an apple crumble served with custard.

Breakfast this morning was a bowl of rice crispies.

Lunch was a cheese toasted sandwiches with BBQ sauce inside.   YUMMY and OOZY cheese!

For dinner we went to a great restaurant in Umhlanga called Verde.  They’ve been featured in our “Damn Fine Food” section before, and they’re still going strong.  For starter Caroline and I both had the calamari.  It was very tasty and tender and it is served with two pieces of lightly toasted bread so that you can mop up all the tasty juices that are left behind once you’ve gobbled up all the calamari!

For main course Caroline had the half chicken peri peri, which was quite firey.  I tasted some of the chicken (and the chips) and it was indeed quite hot and it tasted wonderful.  It was a “special” which usually should not be assumed to mean cheaper, but we were surprised when we looked at the bill and it was only R50.

My meal was not so cheap!  I had the six king prawns, which were magnificent.  I’m not really a big garlic eater, mainly because I’m always afriad of garlic breath the next day, but these were wonderfully garlicky and sweet.  These prawns were big.  Much bigger than what is normally termed as LM or Mozambique prawns, which is what contributed to the cost.  At R180 they were quite expensive, but I have no idea what prawns of this size normally go for.

We both wanted to have the upside down apple crumble for dessert, but were informed that it wasn’t at it’s best today due to a change in supplier.  It was still available, but they were not happy with it and recommended that we rather try something else.  We were disappointed for sure, but sometimes that’s the push you need to try something else from the menu!   We both decided to have the rice pudding.  The photo really doesn’t do it any justice (again it’s too dark for good photos), but it really was nice with chunks of fruit throughout and a sweet, velvety creamy sauce.

Breakfast this morning was cornflakes.

I didn’t take a photo of lunch as it was leftovers from last nights dinner of beef olives.  They’re just as yummy the next day.

Dinner tonight continues our quest to empty the freezer.  Bugger the veggies is what I say.  This is two meat and eggs!

The sausages are from Günther’s in the Midlands, they’re the shübling.  Crispy bacon, OMG it’s wonderful!  And two lovely eggs.  I asked Caro what sauces she wants to go with this and she said none.  The egg will be her sauce.  I said that I would have some BBQ sauce, but in the end I didn’t actually use any.  The egg became my sauce! :-)
