cape town fish market

Caroline’s last day at work is next Wednesday (the 30th) and so she’s been going to a few farewell lunches organised by different departments of her company that have appreciated the quality of her work over the years – to put it mildly they’re sad to see her go, but we must move on.  We fly to our future home – Sydney, Australia on Thursday to look for suitable places to live, and to do things like open bank accounts and the like.

On Friday one of the departments decided to take her to lunch at our favourite place, Gusto! (ok, they asked her where she wanted to go, and this was her choice) – I tagged along because I’m friendly with the people in that department and of course because it’s Gusto! :-)

I didn’t want to look like the food porn geek so I simply snapped a shot of my meal, the Riviera burger.  Caroline had the Hawaiian burger (beef patty with pineapple), and most of the others had burgers too.  The Riviera burger is a beef patty with brie cheese and cranberry sauce.  It’s a strange combination when you first think about it, but when you taste it you realise that it’s not as strange as you think, and it’s pretty amazing.  As you can see it is served on a portuguese roll (as are all the burgers at Gusto!), and it is also served with thick cut potato wedge chips.

Later in the day we did our weekly shopping, and we asked each other what we felt like for dinner.  Caro said that she felt like sushi, and I would never say no to sushi so we headed off to Cape Town Fish Market in Gateway Shopping Centre.  I didn’t actually take any photos of the sushi because we have taken so many over the past months from this branch of CTFM so if you want to see sushi just do a quick search on this site.  Caroline had only sushi – a prawn and avo fashion sandwich, seared tuna and a prawn tempura hand roll.  I had the same except for the hand roll.  Instead I had the Kingklip bento box.  The Kingklip* was amazing – so succulent and meaty, and to dip those Kingklip “fingers” into the Kewpie mayo was just wonderful! :-)  I wasn’t too impressed with the rest of the box though.  The rice had a hard outer coating (the outer rice had hardened), the kake age vegetables were mostly onion, but were also very oily, and the coleslaw was really just some shredded cabbage with mayo and sesame seeds.  If I could have had just the Kingklip I would have.

* Kingklip is a type of fish that lives in the cold waters off South Africa’s west coast.  It is a species that is currently under threat from over fishing (so I very rarely have it these days), but as a result it is often replaced with a fish that people from other countries might recognise, Ling.  The two fish are similar which is why they are interchanged, but Kingklip is supposed to be a better fish for eating.  The problem comes in when restaurants substitute Kingklip for Ling and don’t tell anyone.  I don’t believe CTFM do this but sometimes this happens at the supplier level and the restaurants don’t even know that the switch has happened.  Don’t you just love unethical Humans?

For lunch I had the remainder of the chicken casserole.

For dinner we went to Cape Town Fish Market for sushi.

Here we have chilli prawn mayo in sweet beancurd wrappers.  Sticky fish, and prawn and avocado fashion sandwiches.

Next up we have a prawn tempura hand roll.

Seven spice calamari strips.

Seared tuna.  I like mine well done, not so much because I don’t like the taste or texture of raw tuna, but because I prefer the taste and texture of well cooked tuna.  I’ve heard people say that to cook tuna like this is sacrilegious and that if tuna is cooked like this then you might as well get it out of a can.  Well I think that’s a load of rubbish.  Even when tuna is cooked like this it is still fresh and tasty, but I do like canned tuna as well.

Caroline decided that she wanted another hand roll.  She got another prawn tempura, but this time opted for the cucumber wrapping rather than the nori.

Normally we get dessert and coffee at CTFM, but this time we decided to go upstairs to the food court and get some ice cream and coffee.  I didn’t take a photo of the ice cream, but here is the coffee from Gloria Jean’s.

I forgot to take photos of breakfast this morning.  BAD BLOGGER…

For lunch we went to Europa Café in La Lucia Mall and had Amalfi, which is a chicken schnitzel on ciabatta bread.

For dinner we had sushi at Cape Town Fish Market in Gateway.  The lighting is not right for photography in there and my phone does not seem to able to focus.  Next time I need to take the proper camera.  This is the prawn and avo fashion sandwich.

The salmon rose without caviar.

Prawn tempura roll without caviar.

Seven spice calamari.

Bento box with prawn tempura, salmon spring rolls, noodles, cabbage with mayo and chocolate brownies.

Caroline had the Calamari robata.

Dinner: Sushi!

NOTE: This post is from Monday evening.  I somehow forgot to post it until now.

Dinner tonight was at Cape Town Fish Market at Gateway in Umhlanga.  They consistently make good sushi there.  Since we’re supposed to be on a diet this week that mandates only free-range/organic chicken, we really shouldn’t have been there.  We had already made plans with our friend CH, so we kind of had to go.  Of course any excuse to get sushi is acceptable.  Our rubber arms were twisted.

First of my sushi conquests for the night was this chilli mayo prawns in bean curd wrappers (with cherries on top!).  They’re really very nice with good chunks of prawn and Kewpie mayo.  They’re also reasonably hot – the green you can see in the photo is a slice of chilli which is also in the mix.

Next up was the deep fried squid/calamari.  This is extra yummy but you have to get it really hot straight from the kitchen to get it at it’s best.  If it has been going around on the conveyor for a while and it’s cool or worse, cold it isn’t very nice.

I should have started with the Miso soup.  In fact I did order it first, but I was bloody hungry and wolfed down the first two dishes before the soup arrived.  I’m not really a big miso fan (Caro hates it), but every now and again I get a bit of a craving for it.

The next dish I had was “sticky fish”.  It’s tuna that is cooked through and then completely coated in a sticky sweet chilli sauce.  I like it, but CH said that she wouldn’t eat that as she thought it looks disgusting!

Seared tuna next.  It’s so nice all charred and coated in nanami tōgarashi. I asked for mine to seared on all sides rather than just one the outsides and then sliced.  It was still raw(ish) and soft inside, but I prefer my tuna to be cooked through, I like the taste and texture more that way.  Sushi purists will be cringing now I’m sure!

Prawn tempura.  Caroline had a prawn tempura hand roll, and I chose to have plain prawn tempura with sweet chilli sauce.  These are really nice, although tonight the tempura was a bit doughy inside.

It was quite loud inside and I could hardly hear what Caro or CH were saying so I suggested that we move outside to a table where we could have dessert.  Here is Caroline’s dessert (already started, naughty…), CH had the same.  It is a half chocolate brownie with ice cream.

My dessert was a chocolate peppermint crisp, which is a kind of chocolate mousse with crushed biscuit and crispy pepperminty chunks.  (Peppermint Crisp is the name of a chocolate bar here).  It has a very high yummy factor.

Lunch: Sushi

by Craig on March 19, 2010 · 0 comments

in Lunch

Our favourite sushi bar reopened the other day after being closed for a month or two.  They refurbished the whole restaurant.  While they were closed we visited almost every other sushi bar in our area, and found some good, and a bad alternative, but we were glad to be back at Cape Town Fish Market (Gateway) none-the-less.

I don’t have time to write a long post as I should be doing chores in preparation for us leaving for Knysna tomorrow, so I’ll just go through the photos and explain them a bit.  At this point I should apologise for the poor quality of the photos.  On this blog I take the photos at the restaurant (obviously), but I also try to upload the photos from the restaurant too, or as soon as I can afterwards which means that I generally do all of that from my phone.  I have an iPhone 3G, and while this is an excellent phone, the camera is quite temperamental.  It takes decent photos in good light, but in any kind of slightly dim light, which is in most restaurants, the quality is poor, mostly in the focussing.  I try my best, but they just don’t always come out they way I plan.

So without further delay, here are the photos of some of the dishes we had.

This was the California Roll with avocado, cucumber and crabstick.

This is the prawn tempura hand roll.  Very yummy!

Salmon Fashion Sandwich.  Very nice, but Caro doesn’t eat these.  We both prefer the Prawn and Avo fashion sandwich, but I like these too.

Sticky Tuna.  Very nice too, although sometimes they make it a bit too over done.  This one was excellent.

Calamari Robata.  There have been many different calamari dishes that CTFM have made over the years.  I prefer the old “lemony” calamari that they don’t make any more, but this one is good too.

Just a shot of the sushi bar with the conveyor so you can see what it looks like.

A café latte.

Caroline’s Chocolate Brownie.

And after pigging out on sushi, all I could handle for dessert was ice cream with chocolate sauce!

Dinner at Cape Town Fish Market

by Craig on March 15, 2010 · 0 comments

in Dinner

We had dinner tonight at Cape Town Fish Market at Suncoast Casino.  Our regular CTFM at Gateway is closed for renovations at the moment, but we’ve been hearing good things about this branch recently too.

For starters we had a Prawn and Avocado Fashion Sandwich each.

And Caroline had a Prawn Tempura.

And I had the calamari strips, coated in “seven spices”.

Since the sushi monster had been awakened, I also went and got two more sushi plates.  A California Roll;

And a Salmon Fashion Sandwich.

For main course Caroline had the Calamari Strips Bento Box.

And I had the Fish and Prawns Combo.  The fish tonight was Swordfish.

For dessert Caroline had the Chocolate – Peppermint Crisp with Ice Cream.

While I went for my usual, the Sticky Toffee Pudding, also with ice cream.

All in all the meal was very good.  Everything cooked properly and very tasty.
