Moo Gourmet Burgers, Bondi Beach, Sydney

A little while back we went out to Bondi Beach for some good burgers at Moo Gourmet Burgers.

We’d seen the restaurant a few times passing on the bus but had never gone in, until today.

Moo is cow themed, not surprisingly.  Items around the restaurant have cow patterns, and cute pictures from kids adorn the walls.

Some of the pictures were very good.  Others were a bit strange – ah to have the imagination of a child again!

Of course we’re here for the food, and before long we’ve ordered some milkshakes.

This one is the TammyMOO.  A chocolate milkshake made from Tim Tam biscuits ($6.50).  Very nice.

And the other was a MOOteaser, which was a chocolate milkshake made from Maltesers and malt ($6.50).

For the burgers Caroline had the Classic Cheese Burger, and added beetroot ($13.50), and onion rings on the side ($4.50).

While I had the Big Moo ($16.50) with chips on the side ($3.50).  The Big Moo consists of a beef patty, cheddar cheese, free range bacon, free range egg, pineapple, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, mayo and relish.

We were happy to see so many free range items on the menu, and the beef is 100% Angus beef.

We loved the burgers and will certainly be back in the future for more!

Jamie’s Italian, Sydney

by Craig on October 27, 2011 · 7 comments

in Dinner,Food

This is a bit of a bonus post as our scheduled Italian visit was still a few weeks away.  Since we’ll be busy with some friends who are visiting Sydney on that night, we decided to visit an Italian restaurant a little earlier than scheduled.

Of course it was fortuitous that Jamie’s Italian had recently opened, and that Simon Leong from Simon Food Favourites had visited a few days earlier and was very positive about the place in his blog post.

We were of course keen to try out Jamie Oliver’s latest venture, and were expecting it to be quite good.  We were not disappointed.  Some people might wonder why Jamie chose an Italian restaurant, but those who have been following his work will know that he was, at least in part, trained by Gennaro Contaldo.  Indeed, according to the Wikipedia article, Gennaro has been responsible for the menus and chef training for Oliver’s UK branches of Jamie’s Italian.  I’m not sure if the same is true for their Sydney outlet, but the quality is certainly there.

It was a bit of an impromptu visit.  I was in the city to look for something at the Apple store, and I asked Caroline if we should perhaps try Jamie’s Italian.  She agreed as we had been discussing visiting the restaurant recently.  We arrived at the door to find the place bustling.  Jamie’s Italian do not take bookings unless you have a group of six or more, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be full.  Fortunately we were able to get a place at the antipasto bar, which in itself was quite nice as you get to see staff preparing breads, meats and cheeses.

We skipped the entrées as we knew that we were going to want to have dessert.  Caroline chose to have the spaghetti bolognese ($19 for the large), which smelled, looked and tasted wonderful.

I chose to have the Italiano burger ($19.50).  I had no idea that it was going to be so tall!  Inside the bun we have onion rings, gherkin, lettuce, chilli, fried pancetta, Italian cheese, burger patty, capsicum.  The onion rings were perfectly lightly fried in what seemed to be a curry/spice based batter.  Very light and not the slightest bit oily.  The gherkin was lovely and not too tangy or vinegary.  I was very happy to see normal lettuce.  Too often good old iceberg or cos lettuce has been replaced by fancy shmancy bitter tasting leaves.

In the first burger photo you can hardly see the patty with all that other stuff going on, so I took all that off to get a photo of the main part of the burger.  The patty was a decent size – not huge, but quite thick, cooked to perfection (at least my perfection) and with a layer of wonderful cheese on top.  The pancetta can be seen, as are the chillies.  Now don’t be put off by the presence of chilli.  These are very, very mild, and the chilli heat was barely detectable, but they taste amazingly piquant.

Dessert was a unanimous decision, tiramisu ($9), and oh my goodness was this good.  The first thing that hits you when it arrives is the smell of the orange, then the coffee.  Delving in, the moist sponge fingers are quite boozy, but are evened out by the cream.  A little slice of heaven.

The coffee was very nice, but perhaps a little on the expensive site at $4.35 each.

Real garlic lined the walls of the antipasto bar, as did many other real foods, such as the large cheese that was right in front of me.

The tables seem sufficiently sized, although I’m not sure how comfortable the chairs are.  After a hour or so sitting on a metal stool, my bum was numb.

The restaurant is well thought out, especially for such a thin and long space.  Despite how busy they were, we had no problems moving about.

ASIDE: What did you think of the photos?  I took these with my new iPhone 4S.  I’ve been disappointed with low light photos from my Canon PowerShot A480, and from my previous iPhone 4.  The 4S has a bigger sensor, and a wider lens, and seemed to do a fairly good job of handling the low light environment.  I don’t use the flash in restaurants, and I don’t want to carry around my SLR cameras to go to a restaurant.  The pictures are a tad grainy, but they seem to be sufficiently focussed.  I need to work on getting level photos with my phone apparently.

Grill’d, Crows Nest, Sydney

Because we have a schedule of cuisines that we like so that we don’t forget and miss out on something, we also have one every now and again that is non-specific.  It’s like that so that we can explore and try other cuisines that we don’t normally try…

But we couldn’t think of any and just craved burgers, so what do you do when you want a really good burger?  You go to Grill’d of course.

We’ve been to the Harbourside outlet before so we wanted to try somewhere else so we chose to go to the Crows Nest branch.  We took the train to St Leonards and walked form the station to Crows Nest – probably about 1km there, and another back.  Well, if you’re going to have a burger you have to have a way to work it off, although Grill’d burgers are generally better than others.

Caroline had the Simply Grill’d burger with added Tasty cheese and pineapple on panini ($9.90 excl. pineapple).  As you can see it was awesome.

I had the Crispy Bacon & Cheese burger on a regular bun ($10.90).  They had a special on that night and all eat-in burgers came with a small chips for free.

If those are the small chips then what the hell do the large chips look like! :-)

Certainly one of the best burgers I’ve eaten, and definitely the best burger I’ve eaten in Australia.

UPDATE:

We’ve been back to Grill’d and had some more burgers.  Since this post is still fresh I didn’t want to make a new one.  Here are the photos…

On this occasion Caro had the “Simon Says” burger ($11.90). Chicken, avocado, bacon, salad, relish & mayo.

I had the “Baa Baa” burger ($11.90).  Lamb, avocado, tasty cheese, salad, relish & mayo.  Fully yummo!

We shared a regular chips ($4.30), and yes it was a plate full.  We chose the sweet chilli mayo, which was nice, but wasn’t very chilli-y.

Charlie & Co Burgers on Urbanspoon

After a hard day of visiting the Sydney Tower :-) we decided to go down to the food court and get something from Charlie & Co.

I decided to have the Wagyu Burger ($16.00).  The burger was ok, but I really don’t think it was worth the price, Wagyu beef or not.  It was just far too small for the price.  Compare that to my post from Grill’d a week ago and you’ll see.  That said, I would still like to go back and try their Federation burger, which is cheaper and has egg, bacon and an Angus beef patty.  To be honest I’m beginning to think that Wagyu in a burger is a bit over rated and just an excuse to put the price up.

The other problem that I had with their burger was that the roll needs a barrier to protect it from the beetroot, which quickly turned the bottom half of the roll into a soggy mess.  It was the beetroot that swayed me when ordering, and it was a lovely tasting beetroot relish.

Caroline had the chicken burger ($14.00), which she says tasted good, but again in my opinion seriously lacked chicken quantity for the price.  If this was an $8 burger I could understand, but it wasn’t.

The onion rings ($7) on the other hand were superb.  Lovely and brown, but not over done.  The crumbing was crispy and tasty, and the onions themselves were beautifully sweet.  The highlight of the meal!

Just like last year we went down to Bondi Beach to the Bondi Winter Festival.

It’s a lovely way to spend a cold winter evening, eating yummy (but not particularly healthy) foods, and drinking hot chocolate and gluhwein, and if you’re so inclined you can try your hand at ice-skating, or you can do what we did and watch the ice-skaters fall over! :-)

Last year the festival was on the grassy hill in front of the beach.  This year it was actually on the beach, which made more sense considering that it is flatter, and at night the sand kind of looks like snow.  Over all I think this year’s set up was better – flatter, wider pathways etc, but I preferred the alpine hut from last year, and some of the food choices from last year were better in my opinion (I missed the kransky sausage stand this year!)

This year’s alpine hut was brighter and less intimate than last years, but they did have a guy playing an accordion and ‘oompah’ music.

On to the food!  This year did see the arrival of the Grill’d Airstream trailer.

The Alpine Hut from the outside.

The stalls selling lovely foody wares.

At the Grill’d trailer we ordered a burger ($10.90) which of course was very nice.

Which was followed by a wonderful pretzel ($3) from King Of Cakes.

And a Bratwurst roll ($8) from Ein Prosit.  To be honest I wasn’t too impressed with the bratwurst roll.  Caro wanted a bockwurst and I talked her into a bratwurst as we were sharing all our meals – I wish I hadn’t.  The bratwurst was a bit bland, and the onions, which should have been nice and sweet were instead very peppery.  A shame.

All the happy people skating!

At Mini Pancakes they had a Sydney Harbour Bridge made our of poffertjes.  The sign says “Display Only”  - I wonder if people had been trying to sample the bridge? :-)

So of course we had to get some poffetjes ($7), which were sprinkled with icing sugar and drizzled with maple syrup.  They were very nice!

Of course after seeing a photo of Adam Liaw‘s doughnut in this tweet, I had to get one myself.  It was wonderfully soft inside, but it was nowhere as big as I was hoping for!  That’s the problem with perspective in photography I guess! :-)  In all fairness, it was a big doughnut, just not *that* big!  The doughnut came from Devine Doughnuts and cost $4.

Finally we went and got an Apple, cinnamon, cream and caramel sauce waffle from Waffle Bite ($9), which was also very nice!  We sat by the ice rink and watched the skaters while we ate our waffle.

Of course a trip to the Winter Festival would not be complete without a hot chocolate with marshmallows ($3.50)

I of course must not forget to thank Lipton for providing free Chai Latte during the Festival, it was much appreciated on the cold evening!

A view from the top of the steps, you can see the Lipton stand, the ice rink and the Alpine hut.

And in the other direction, a barren Bondi beach – it’s only current inhabitants were a large flock of seagulls!

And a view across the road of the Bondi Beach shops.

The Bondi Bergstation Winter Festival continues until 17 July, but if you miss it there’s another one in the city from 22 July – 12 August (which we’re also going to).  And if you miss that too, or are not in Sydney, there’ll be one in Melbourne too from 18 August – 4 September.

Grill'd on Urbanspoon

The weekend before last we went to the Sydney Good Food & Wine Show, and used that as an excuse to visit a burger place that we’d been wanting to try since The Food Pornographer tried Grill’d in Perth last month.

Caroline had the Simply Grill’d burger, and added cheese and beetroot ($9.90).  Grilled 100% lean beef, salad, relish, herbed mayo.

I had the “Almighty” burger! ($12.50), and it was indeed a monster.  100% lean beef, tasty cheese, crispy trim bacon, free-range egg (yay!), a couple of slices of beetroot and salad, relish and herbed mayo.

Difficult to eat, but awesomely tasty!  I knocked it over in the photo so you could get a better look.

Finally chippies! ($4.30) These were so nice, but we were so stuffed after the burgers that we probably shouldn’t have had the chips.  Perfectly cut and fried, and salted with a herb salt.

We’ll certainly go back there, and what’s better is that with each burger you order you get a bottle top ‘token’ to drop in a jar for the charity of your choice (there are three to choose from).  At a certain point the tokens are counted and the one with the most gets $300 – the other two get $100 each.  Brilliant!

Food: Walnut Grove, Sandton City

by Craig April 14, 2011 Food

While Caroline’s folks were still up in Johannesburg we decided to take them to Sandton on the train.  Once there we went to Sandton City (a large shopping centre), and had lunch at a place called Walnut Grove. We were shown to a table, but the stench from the smoking area was too much to [...]

Those who know us will know that we’re emigrating to Australia.  Part of that process is that we move from Durban to Johannesburg to be close enough to our cats while they are in quarantine.  We move up to Jo’burg on Wednesday this week (which should be fun… NOT!), but last weekend we drove up [...]
