Today we needed to visit Caroline’s parents to give some computer lessons. We struck a deal with them that in “payment” they’d do toasted sarmies on the Hot Rock*. They decided to add boerewors to the mix, which was a good call as this particular brand of ‘wors was very nice. I had it on a white bread roll with tomato sauce and German mustard. The toasted sarmie was a traditional (at least for Caro’s family) cheese, tomato and onion, which was also very tasty.
* A “hot rock” is an electric BBQ manufactured years ago by General-Electric. It uses an electric element and volcanic rock (lava) to generate and retain heat to evenly cook the food placed on the grill.

Those sausages look huge! I think I could only eat half.
Yeah, I’m afraid when it comes to boerewors I’m a bit of a piggy. Plus Caroline’s parents really don’t help as they a) cook as if to feed Africa and b) like to serve big portions.
Boerewors comes in a long continuous sausage all coiled up. A bit like Cumberland, but it takes more like German bratwurst.
Those toasted sandwiches done on a braai (barbecue) aren’t just a tradition in my family, they’re a very typical South African thing.
Have a look at the Braai Broodjies here:
