On Monday we went to Sailors Thai in The Rocks. We’d been recommended the place by our friend Bart, who raved about the place after his last visit to Sydney.
Sailors Thai has two sections, the canteen and the main restaurant. We looked at both menus and decided to visit the canteen. Both menus were similar but the canteen was much cheaper. We were seated at a long continuous table with many other patrons. It was a bit on the noisy side, but this was certainly made up for by the quality of the food.
Our starter course was two vegetarian curry puffs ($10), which were so nice. The vegetables were predominantly potato which is fine by me. I love a good curried potato. The pastry was light and flaky. Normally I don’t like the pastry around curry puffs, but this was excellent.
Our bowl of steamed rice ($3 per person – possibly unlimited amounts of rice, but we didn’t test this!).
Our two main courses, which we shared were; stir fried chicken, pumpkin, thai basil, egg and red chilli ($26.50) and….
… Mussaman curry of beef with potatoes ($28). Both were excellent, although I preferred the beef curry. I love the gravy that comes with these types of curry.
We were surprised to see that the only green curry that was on the menu was fish. Our local Thai restaurants usually let you have green and red curries with your choice of meat, but usually chicken. And I didn’t see one red curry on the menu.

The Canteen was also our choice. Glad you enjoyed it. I raved about it for a good reason but our two visits were 6 years ago and in 6 years a lot can happen but it’s good to know their standards have not gone down since than.
Hey Bart! It is still good! I just wish they had more green and red curries on the menu! That’s what other restaurants are for I suppose!
Those pictures make me drool!
You’re so lucky to have eaten at so many delicious restaurants. Were there many bad experiences?
They make me drool too!
With all your comments and looking back over the posts I wrote you have officially self-hungryfied me!
I’m sure there must be back restaurants in Sydney, and maybe we were just lucky or made good choices and did good research, but not one of the places we went to was bad. Food was always good. Service differed, but was usually of a very high standard.
