German Sausages at Günther's

Recently we decided to take a drive up to the KZN Midlands to go and visit one of our favourite restaurants ever.  Günther and Carmen Janz run Günther’s German Sausages, and honestly these are the best German sausages that you will find in KwaZulu-Natal.  Possibly/probably in South Africa.

The “restaurant”, if you can really call it that is located in the grounds of their home, which is also a bed and breakfast should you eat far too many sausages and feel unable to make the trip home!  As you can see in the photo they have and undercover area that has been recently expanded so that you can be shielded from the African sun, and the rain, and an uncovered area should you wish to catch a few of those rays.  The place is decorated in a German/Swiss style with postcards on the walls, cow bells of various sizes, and with German “oompah” music playing in the background.  You really feel that you could be in rural Germany, especially with the very scenic midlands grassy hills around.  (Not having been to Germany of course, I imagine this is what it might be like!)

On to the food.  In the photo above we have the food as it arrived at the table.  Two käsegrille (cheese grillers), one for each of us.  Each order comes standard with fried potato and a bread roll, and is served with a pot of glorious German mustard.  You can also order a side of sauerkraut if you wish.  The sausages that they have available are the aforementioned käsegrille, as well as bratwurst, cervelat, shübling, and occasionally a veal sausage.  All the sausages are either made on the property or freshly delivered from one of Günther’s relatives.  All the sausages are available frozen too so that you can take them home and enjoy them there as well.  Perfect for a sausage sizzle!

This is my plate after dishing up.

And almost immediately, I always make a “chip butty”.  The roll is roughly torn open and a whole lot of the potatoes are stuffed in there with some mustard.  Mmm, very nice!

Something else that has become a bit of a tradition on our visits to Günther’s is to have a slice of Black Forrest Cake.  Oh it’s sooo nice!

On the way home we stopped off at a farm stall and found these cute biscuits.  A pirate ginger bread man, a little piggy, and a smily face. :-)

I know I just ate dinner, but that made me hungry all over again.

Those potatoes look like the perfect complement to the sausages!

I love the mustard on the table too, perfect for us mustard freaks :)

I’m sure will love Lowenbrau and Bavarian Bier Cafe when you move to Sydney!

I had been itching to go back to Günther’s since I started this blog. It’s the single restaurant that I truly wanted to add and popularise. We’ve been going to Günther’s for years and the quality and service has never wavered. It’ll be a pity when we’re in Sydney and can’t visit as often (like maybe once a year or something!)

So I’m glad that you know of other places in Sydney that we can try! I’m sure that they will be frequented, especially if they are as good as Günther’s. Thanks Juji!

Craig,

Those potatoes look FANTASTIC, especially in the first pic. Mmm, and the meal finished with black forest cake AND gingerbread – how wonderful!

I used to be terribly addicted to cheese sausages and ate far too many of them. I made the decision to give them up completely and stopped eating them maybe 10 years ago. Just a bite of one could cause me to fall off the wagon, so I stay well away from them – admiring photos is as far as I go. :)

Hmm, I think I would rather be 1000kg than give up cheese sauages! :-)

I shudder even thinking about it!

I can hear it now…

“Hi, I’m TFP, and I’m addicted to cheese sausages!”

He he!
