Last week we visited Butcher Boys, which is a local steak house. It isn’t a high class restaurant, but it is more upmarket than your regular typical steak house. We went there for my Dad’s birthday which was the next day.
It’s always a safe bet at Butcher Boys. I don’t really ever recall having a bad meal there, unlike some other high-end steak houses around Durban.
I do apologise for the quality of the pictures. I didn’t really want to use flash as the restaurant was quite dark, but at the same time the photos are poor quality because the lighting was so low. Some I did use flash, some I didn’t.
Around the table we go! This is my what my Dad ordered – the Avocado Dijon Sirlion. As you can see it was so saucy that you can’t even see the meat! Some people like that, some don’t. I don’t mind sauces, but generally I prefer the meat to be plain basted.
My Mom had the 200g Fillet with mashed potato.
Caroline also had the 200g fillet, but she had her’s with chips.
We got a vegetable platter for the table that consisted of lovely fried mushrooms, butternut, broccoli and creamed spinach. It was al very nice, but the mushrooms and spinach were my favourites.
My meal was a fillet and calamari with mashed potato. On the menu it’s listed as sirloin, but you can upgrade any meat to fillet for R15. Now people have their favourite cuts of meat. Mine is fillet (as is Caroline’s), my Dad reckons that sirloin or rib-eye is the best, and I know people that revere rump and T-bone. Personally I can’t stand the fat that is often present on other cuts, and I prefer the taste and tenderness of fillet. Nevertheless whenever we mention that our favourite cut is fillet we get told how it is an inferior cut. If that’s the case, then why is it always more expensive than the other cuts?
For dessert, Caroline had the ice cream and Bar-One sauce. Bar-One is South Africa’s equivilent to a Mars bar, although they are slightly different. We have Mars bars here now, but during the era of Apartheid sanctions we didn’t, and a home grown alternative was developed. Now that we can get Mars bars, we have more choice because we also still have Bar-One.
My Mom had the chocolate cheesecake.
And I had the Malva pudding. Malva is a typically South African pudding, but it is similar to sticky toffee pudding that is also served at restaurants in the area.
