OMG! This has to have been the best breakfast ever!
We visited São Gonçalo’s Kitchen at Old Nick Village in Plettenberg Bay. We wanted to visit the other shops at this craft village, but we had also wanted to come back to the café that was there. We’re glad we did because, honestly the traditional breakfast has to be the best breakfast you could ever want (unless you’re a vegetarian of course!)
Firstly boerewors for breakfast is a big win, especially one as tasty as this one was. Often restaurants give you cheap ‘wors that is all gristly and either too herby or bland. This was a perfect compromise. The next conquest was the bacon. It had a bit too much fat on it for my liking, but that is easily cut off and the bacon meat was very nice. Next up the mushrooms, fried in butter of course, they probably were not the most healthy, but damn they were good. I could go on and on, but to be honest, ALL the ingredients were high quality and very very tasty.
This is the traditional breakfast that I had.
And this is their version of eggs benedict. Served on a toasted croissant with bacon on half and ham on the other, topped with two fried eggs. That’s a cheese sauce in the bowl. Caroline says it was very yummy and full of eggy goodness.
The breakfasts are served with toast and enough butter and jam to feed the masses.
Also on their menu was the country breakfast with – wait for it – everything I had in the traditional plus a grilled pork chop and a sirloin steak. Another item on the menu that looked interesting was the Trinchado Omelette – cubes steak and two types of cheese in a Portuguese sauce I assume inside a normal omelette.

Try Mario’s which you will find at Knysna’s Waterfront. Their breakfast is good value for money, the coffee is good and its a good place to eat. But more often than not I wander down to Cruise Cafe where they do an ‘On the Run’ breakfast which is definitately not Eggs Benidict but its different and I ask for a basket of toast I nibble on whilst reading the mornings paper. East Head Cafe is generally good and the location is stunning. Finally for different try a little Cafe that is out of the way at the Old Gaol i Q.
Who is Cooking, thanks for that. You have given us quite a few ideas on places to visit. The funny thing is that when we were at the Waterfront we looked at Mario’s, and in fact Caroline even said that this place is supposed to be very good, but decided to go to The Drydock anyway.
I think we may try to get to Mario’s another day, and perhaps try East Head Café again now that the masses have left after the holiday.
